Background

He joined the company in April 1976, became an Executive Officer in March 2006, Director and Managing Executive Officer in March 2008, and Representative Director and Senior Executive Officer in September 2011. He became Representative Director and CEO in March 2012, served as CEO and Chairman of the Board from March 2013, and as Representative Executive Officer, CEO and Chairman of the Board from March 2016. He became Chairman of the Board in March 2020.

Selection

In March 2012 he moved up from Representative Director and Senior Executive Officer to CEO, succeeding Shoshi Arakawa. In the fiscal year before he took office, ended December 2011, revenue was ¥3,024.3 billion, operating income ¥191.3 billion and net income ¥102.9 billion, with operating income below the ¥250.0 billion of FY ended December 2007. The following March, in 2013, he also became Chairman of the Board, so one person held both the CEO and chairman roles.

Initiatives

In May 2012 the company set up Bridgestone Specialty Tire Manufacturing in Thailand, a dedicated base for high-value products: tires for mining and construction vehicles and for aircraft. In October 2015 it announced the acquisition of U.S.-based Pep Boys for about ¥100 billion, but investor Carl Icahn bid up the price, and the company stopped matching once Icahn offered $18.50 a share. In May 2017 Bridgestone Europe acquired France's Ets. Paul Hiemer, adding it to its European dealer network.
