Background
He graduated from Yamaguchi Higher Commercial School in March 1936 and joined Kansai Paint the same year. He became deputy head of the Tokyo branch in March 1966, then Director in May 1967, Managing Director in October 1969, Senior Managing Director in November 1971 and Director and Executive Vice President in May 1975. Born in Tottori Prefecture in 1915, he was 63 when he became President. He was a career employee from sales who took 31 years from joining to reach the board.

His predecessor, Yorihiko Bando, and the president before that, Masao Kodama, were both engineers from the Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, while Kuwata graduated from Yamaguchi Higher Commercial School and rose to the board from the Tokyo branch. His promotion came three years after he became Executive Vice President in May 1975 and 42 years after he joined.
