Background
He graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo in March 1931 and joined Kansai Paint that April. He became a Director in November 1958, Managing Director in May 1964, Senior Managing Director in November 1967, and Director and Executive Vice President in April 1971. Born in Tokushima Prefecture in 1908, he was 64 when he became President. He was the second president with an applied chemistry background, following Masao Kodama, who graduated from the same department in 1923.
Selection
He became President in May 1972. His predecessor, Noritaka Kotani, who stepped back to Director and Senior Advisor that month, was an administrator who had handled general affairs, personnel and operations. Bando's promotion came one year and one month after he became Executive Vice President in April 1971, and 41 years and one month after he joined. At the same time, Toshiharu Kuwata, who became Senior Managing Director in November 1971, was alongside him, and the presidency appears to have continued alternating between engineers and administrators.
Initiatives
In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 1973, non-consolidated revenue was ¥39.6 billion and ordinary income ¥1.5 billion. Revenue grew to ¥54.4 billion in FY ended March 1974, spanning the first oil crisis, but fell to ¥60.4 billion in FY ended March 1976, with an ordinary loss of ¥2.4 billion. In July 1974 the company acquired shares of Kanpe Shoji. In FY ended March 1978, his final year, revenue recovered to ¥85.3 billion with ordinary income of ¥1.7 billion, and in May 1978 he handed the presidency to Toshiharu Kuwata.
