Background

He joined Kansai Paint in May 1928 and served as an overseas manager and as manager of the Tokyo branch and head of the Tokyo plant. He became Director, head of the Tokyo branch and head of the Tokyo plant in December 1947, Director, head of the Osaka head office and head of the Amagasaki plant in May 1955, and Managing Director that November. He became head of General Affairs and Senior Managing Director in March 1964, took charge of planning, general affairs and personnel from May 1966, and became Director and Executive Vice President in November 1967. Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1902, he was 67 when he became President.

Selection

He became President in November 1969. His predecessor, Masao Kodama, was an engineer who had graduated from the Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo and headed the Technology Division. Kotani led the Tokyo and Osaka bases and plants, then handled general affairs, personnel and operations from March 1964. His promotion came two years after he became Executive Vice President and 41 years and six months after he joined. He appears to have succeeded an engineer from a background in sales and administration.

Initiatives

After he took office, the company acquired shares of Kanpe Hapio in May 1971 and opened the Kanuma plant the following June. Non-consolidated revenue was ¥32.2 billion with ordinary income of ¥0.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1971, and ¥34.4 billion and ¥0.9 billion in FY ended March 1972. In May 1972 he stepped back to Director and Senior Advisor and handed the presidency to Executive Vice President Yorihiko Bando. His tenure of two years and six months was on the short side for postwar Kansai Paint.
