Background
He joined Ono Pharmaceutical in April 1983. He became a Director in June 2006, Managing Director in December 2007, Executive Vice President in February 2008 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June of that year. It took him 23 years from joining to reach the board. In the fiscal year ended March 2006 the top major shareholders were trust banks such as Japan Trustee Services Bank at 6.24% and foreign institutional investors, with the Ono Scholarship Foundation seventh at 2.67%.

In September 2008 he became President, succeeding Daikichi Fukushima. The promotion came three months after he became Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June of that year. In the fiscal year ended March 2008, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥145.9 billion and operating income ¥52.3 billion, down for two straight years from ¥148.7 billion and ¥56.9 billion in FY ended March 2006. The appointment appears to have handed him the problem of stalling core products.
Initiatives
In 2011 the company signed a strategic alliance with Bristol-Myers Squibb, granting it overseas development and marketing rights to an anti-PD-1 antibody. The antibody was launched as Opdivo in 2014, and net sales grew from ¥160.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2016 to ¥244.8 billion in FY ended March 2017, with operating income rising from ¥30.5 billion to ¥72.3 billion. In 2024 the company decided on the acquisition of Deciphera Pharmaceuticals of the US, gaining a sales network in Europe and the US. In April of that year he moved to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO.
