Background

He joined Mitsubishi Gas Chemical in April 1971, became General Manager of Administration for the Aromatic Chemicals Company in June 2000, and in June 2001, as a Director, concurrently headed that company's Aromatics No. 2 Division and its administration department. In June 2003 he became President of the Aromatic Chemicals Company as Managing Executive Officer. From June 2005 he oversaw the Finance and Accounting Center and the Raw Materials and Logistics Center, leaving the business companies to take charge of company-wide finance and logistics.

Selection

In June 2007 Hideki Odaka, President since June 2001, stepped back to Chairman and Sakai became President. For the two years before he took office he had overseen the Finance and Accounting Center and the Raw Materials and Logistics Center, rather than serving as president of a business company. In the fiscal year ended March 2008, the year after he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥519.3 billion and ordinary income ¥61.8 billion, but in FY ended March 2009 they fell to ¥447.6 billion and ¥7.0 billion.

Initiatives

In August 2009 the company established Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Engineering-Plastics (Shanghai) to produce polycarbonate, and in January 2012 it set up MGC ELECTROTECHNO (THAILAND) CO., LTD to make and sell copper-clad laminates and prepregs. Consolidated net sales bottomed out at ¥384.5 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2010 and recovered to ¥452.2 billion in FY ended March 2012. Employees increased from 4,686 in FY ended March 2008 to 5,216 in FY ended March 2012. In FY ended March 2013, the year he stepped down, the company posted a consolidated net loss of ¥7.8 billion.
