He left Shinsei Bank in March 2001 and joined Yaoko in April of that year. He became General Manager of Grocery in January 2009, a Director in June of that year, Deputy General Manager of the Management Reform Promotion Headquarters in December, Managing Director in June 2011 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in February 2012. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the top major shareholders were Kawano Shoji at 17.74% and Kawano Partners at 9.97%, with individuals Kiyomi Kawano at 7.40% and Yukio Kawano at 2.96%, while Sumito Kawano himself was not in the top ten.

In 2025 he established the pure holding company Blue Zone Holdings and moved to a holding company structure. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥237.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2013, before he took office, to ¥813.2 billion in FY ended March 2026, and ordinary income from ¥10.8 billion to ¥35.7 billion.
