Background
He joined Nippon Sanso in April 1992. From June 2006 he served at Matheson Tri-Gas in the US successively as marketing manager, head of the purifier business and Vice President of business development. He then held one business development post after another: General Manager of Business Development in the International and Corporate Planning Headquarters (April 2014), General Manager of Business Development in the Development Headquarters (June 2018) and General Manager of the Innovation Division (April 2021). In June 2023 he also took on running a subsidiary as Representative Director and President of Taiyo Nippon Sanso JFP.
Selection
On June 17, 2026 he became Representative Director, President and CEO, succeeding Toshihiko Hamada, who stepped back to adviser. From April 2025 Watanabe had assisted the President as Executive Vice President, overseeing corporate planning, business administration and business promotion. He was appointed after serving in a role overseeing company-wide planning and administration under the President, and the change appears to continue his predecessor's course.

He took office in June 2026, and no decisions from his tenure have yet been disclosed. The material available at the time he took office is that in the previous fiscal year, ended March 2026, consolidated revenue was ¥1,359.6 billion, operating income ¥197.9 billion and net income ¥123.9 billion. The new President's management policy and investment decisions will be added once future disclosures are available.
