Background

He joined Mitsubishi Chemical Industries (now Mitsubishi Chemical) in April 1976 and moved to Taiyo Sanso in October 1981. There he became head of the President's Office in November 1984, a Director in June 1985, Managing Director in June 1989 and Senior Managing Director in June 1992. At Taiyo Toyo Sanso, formed by a merger with Toyo Sanso in April 1995, he served as Representative Director and Executive Vice President from June 1997, Representative Director and President from June 2000, and President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) from June 2001. As of the fiscal year ended March 2011 he held 855,000 shares.

Selection

Taiyo Nippon Sanso was formed in October 2004 through a merger of Nippon Sanso and Taiyo Toyo Sanso in a spirit of equality. Kawaguchi joined the merged company at its launch as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. From the launch until June 2006, Hiroshi Taguchi, who had joined Nippon Sanso, was President and Yoshinosuke Ose, who had joined Taiyo Sanso, was Chairman, and from June 2006 Kansuke Matsueda, who had joined Nippon Sanso, took over as President. In June 2010 Matsueda moved to Representative Director and Chairman and Kawaguchi became President. The appointment appears to have passed the presidency to someone from the former Taiyo side six years after the merger.

Initiatives

In April 2010, just before he took office, the company acquired all shares of Western International Gas & Cylinders, Inc. through its US subsidiary Matheson Tri-Gas. During his tenure it established TNSK Corporation, a joint venture for MOCVD equipment with PSK of South Korea, in January 2011, and in June of that year began producing hydrogen selenide and monosilane in Japan. In February 2012 it made Leeden Limited a subsidiary through a tender offer via its Singapore subsidiary. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, his first year, net sales were ¥483.6 billion and ordinary income ¥34.2 billion.
