Background

He joined Matsumotokiyoshi in April 1965, became Senior Managing Director in April 1975 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 1998. It took him 36 years from joining to reach the presidency. Among major shareholders at the end of March 2008, he himself ranked second with 11.03% and Tetsuo Matsumoto third with 10.48%, so two individuals named Matsumoto held over 20%. The largest holder was a foreign nominee account with 12.65%, followed by these individual shareholders. Even after stepping down as President, he remained as Representative Director and Chairman when MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. was launched in October 2021.

Selection

He became Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 1998 and was promoted to President two years and eight months later, in February 2001. In the fiscal year ended March 2002, the year after he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥256.3 billion and ordinary income ¥12.4 billion. With the move to a holding company structure in October 2007 he became Representative Director and President of Matsumotokiyoshi Holdings; he stepped back to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO in April 2009, then returned to the presidency as Chairman and President in April 2011.

Initiatives

He served as President from February 2001 to April 2009 and again from April 2011 to April 2014, eleven years in total, before handing over to Kiyoo Matsumoto. In October 2007 the group moved to a holding company structure, splitting into the operating company Matsumotokiyoshi and the holding company Matsumotokiyoshi Holdings. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥256.3 billion in the FY ended March 2002 to ¥495.4 billion in the FY ended March 2014, the year he stepped down, and ordinary income from ¥12.4 billion to ¥24.5 billion.
