Background
He joined Mitsukoshi in April 1973, moved to Irifune in August 1978, and founded a food supermarket in April 1981. He became Representative Director and President when Kobe Bussan was founded in November 1985, and also served as chairman of Dalian Fulaixiu Foods from July 1992, Kobe Bussan (Hong Kong) from January 2004 and Kobe Bussan (Anqiu) Foods from February 2004, personally handling production and procurement on the Chinese side. He became Representative Director and Chairman in September 2004. At the end of the FY ended October 2006 the major shareholders were Numata himself with 53.44% and Mineko Numata, Masumi Numata and Hirokazu Numata with 4.55% each, the four together exceeding 67%.

In September 2008, four years after becoming chairman in September 2004, he returned to the presidency as Representative Director, Chairman and President. His predecessor was Kanji Sagawa. In the FY ended October 2008, the year of his return, consolidated net sales grew to ¥107.1 billion, while ordinary income fell from ¥1.6 billion the previous year to ¥0.8 billion and net income from ¥1.0 billion to ¥0.4 billion. Between March and April of that same year, 2008, Numata became Representative Director and Chairman of four companies, Auster Egg, Prime Lead, Turmelt Foods and Best Linkage, personally overseeing the food manufacturers that had been bought.
Initiatives
From March 2008 to October 2010 he successively took on the posts of Representative Director and Chairman of Auster Egg, Turmelt Foods, Masuzen, Hata Shokuhin, Niku no Taiko, Mugi Pan Kobo, Kobe Cook and Kobe Bussan Green Egypt, holding the acquired food manufacturers as the company's own domestic factories. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥107.1 billion in the FY ended October 2008 to ¥150.7 billion in the FY ended October 2011, and net income recovered from ¥0.4 billion to ¥1.8 billion. Headcount rose from 594 in the FY ended October 2008 to 796 in the FY ended October 2010.
