Background
He joined Yakult Honsha in April 1960. He became general manager of development in April 1976, a Director in April 1983, Managing Director in June 1989, Senior Managing Director in June 1990, Executive Vice President in June 1993 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 1995. It took 36 years from joining to the presidency, and the only pre-officer post shown in his biography in the annual securities reports is general manager of development. As of the fiscal year ended March 2010 he held 67,300 shares.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President in June 1996, after a year as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. The four Senior Managing Directors in the officer list for the fiscal year ended March 2010 all joined in April 1971 and became Directors between 2003 and 2005, a gap of 20 years from Hori, who joined the board in 1983. After taking office he also became a director of the Japan Business Federation in May 2002, chairman of the Japan Fermented Milk and Lactic Acid Bacteria Beverages Association in June 2002, and Director and owner of the Yakult baseball club in March 2003.
Initiatives
In March 2004 the company concluded a strategic alliance agreement with Groupe Danone of France. In October 2005 it established Yakult Danone India, its first joint venture with Danone, with a 50:50 stake. Consolidated net sales in the fiscal year ended March 2009 were ¥293.5 billion, with beverages and food manufacturing and sales accounting for ¥244.2 billion and pharmaceuticals manufacturing and sales ¥35.2 billion. Consolidated operating profit that year was ¥16.7 billion, ordinary profit ¥25.4 billion and net income ¥11.3 billion.
