Background
Akio Matsuzaki joined Morinaga & Co. in 1955 and from 1974 was President of the affiliate Morinaga General Mills. At the parent he became a Director in 1977 and Managing Director in 1980, and became President in June 1983. His path took him away from the confectionery mainstream to run an affiliate, and from there back to the top of the parent.
Selection
In the fiscal year ended March 1983, the year before Akio Matsuzaki became President, Morinaga & Co. posted net sales of ¥113.9 billion and ordinary profit of ¥4.3 billion, but net income fell to ¥1.6 billion from ¥2.6 billion the previous year. In his first year, FY ended March 1984, results recovered to net sales of ¥122.0 billion, ordinary profit of ¥4.5 billion and net income of ¥4.2 billion. The following year, FY ended March 1985, however, net sales fell to ¥99.0 billion and ordinary profit to ¥0.2 billion, with a net loss of ¥3.0 billion. His predecessor was Heihachi Inoo.
Initiatives
In 1990 Morinaga & Co. drew up a master plan for "Angel Forest," an ideal city with a total project cost of ¥350 billion. In May 1994 it launched Weider in Jelly, which at the time remained a small new area. In December 1996 the confectionery division was split into self-supporting "Morinaga business units," and in the fiscal year ended March 1997 the company fell to no dividend for the first time in 11 years. Akio Matsuzaki became Chairman in June 1997.
