He joined Daiwa House Industry in April 1970 and was promoted to Director in June 1997, Managing Director in June 2000 and Senior Managing Director in June 2001, becoming President in April 2004. He is a career employee who spent 34 years from joining to the presidency without working at another company. Major shareholders were trust banks and financial institutions, and no founding-family members or individuals were in the top ten in the fiscal year ended March 2006.

In April 2004 he succeeded Takeo Higuchi as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2004, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥1,224.6 billion, ordinary profit ¥72.6 billion and net income ¥37.3 billion, just after a return to profit within a year of the ¥91.4 billion net loss of the previous year. He rose to President three years after becoming Senior Managing Director.

Initiatives

Over seven years in office, consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,365.9 billion in FY ended March 2005 to ¥1,690.1 billion in FY ended March 2011, and operating profit from ¥67.8 billion to ¥87.7 billion. The financial crisis from autumn 2008 drove net income down to ¥4.1 billion in FY ended March 2009, and net sales fell to ¥1,609.8 billion in FY ended March 2010. In his final year, FY ended March 2011, sales and profit rose again, and he handed over to his successor, Naotake Ono. Net sales, which had stalled around ¥1.2 trillion, grew by more than ¥400 billion over seven years.
