Background

He joined Sumitomo Forestry in April 1963 and became a Director in December 1988, Managing Director in June 1992 and Senior Managing Director in June 1995. Until becoming President in April 1999, he worked only at Sumitomo Forestry. Major shareholders were Sumitomo companies, including Sumitomo Metal Mining (5.72%), Sumitomo Corporation (2.48%), Sumitomo Life Insurance (2.39%), Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (2.34%) and Sumitomo Trust and Banking (1.93%), with no individuals in the top ten. He was not a President backed by founding-family capital but an internal promotion 36 years after joining.

In April 1999 he was promoted from Senior Managing Director to President, 36 years after joining in 1963 and 11 years after joining the board in December 1988. In his second year, the fiscal year ended March 2001, consolidated net sales were ¥682.4 billion and ordinary profit ¥16.9 billion, but in FY ended March 2002 net sales fell to ¥644.7 billion and ordinary profit to ¥3.7 billion, and in FY ended March 2003 the company posted a net loss of ¥15.4 billion. His first few years coincided with shrinking demand for housing and timber and building materials.

Initiatives

During his tenure, consolidated net sales grew from ¥682.4 billion in FY ended March 2001 to ¥911.7 billion in FY ended March 2007. Operating profit rose to ¥15.4 billion in FY ended March 2006 and ¥20.4 billion in FY ended March 2007, then shrank to ¥7.2 billion in FY ended March 2008 and ¥6.8 billion in FY ended March 2009. In his final year, FY ended March 2010, net sales were ¥723.9 billion, operating profit ¥9.7 billion and net income ¥2.4 billion, and in April 2010 he became Chairman.
