Background

He graduated from the architecture department of the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Engineering in March 1927 and joined Shimizu Corporation that April. He became a Director in November 1947, Managing Director in February 1950 and Senior Managing Director in November 1958, then Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in March 1961 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in November 1962. The policies he set out as Executive Vice President were to maintain a 22% dividend with a 2-3% commemorative dividend, and a view that firms centered on building work offered better continuing stability than civil engineering, with its long construction periods and low turnover. He was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1902.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture (1927)

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in September 1966. In the 1961 and 1966 officer listings, the President was Yasuo Shimizu and Masao Shimizu headed the Executive Vice Presidents, so the Shimizu family held the top. Masao Shimizu became Chairman in the same month of September 1966, so Yoshikawa's appointment appears to have coincided with a reshuffle removing the founding family from the top. He took office 39 years after joining and four years after becoming Executive Vice President.

Initiatives

His presidency ran five years and eight months, from September 1966 to May 1972. In May 1971 the company added real estate transactions to its business purposes, opening the way to revenue sources beyond contracting. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥270.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1971 to ¥310.3 billion in his final year, FY ended March 1972, and ordinary profit from ¥16.4 billion to ¥17.5 billion. In May 1972 he stepped back to Chairman, and Executive Vice President Kiichi Noji succeeded him.
