Background

Born in Fukushima in 1901, he graduated from the architecture department of Tokyo Higher Technical School in 1922 and joined Okura Doboku that April. He became a Director in March 1947, Managing Director in June 1950 and Senior Managing Director in May 1957, then Executive Vice President in December 1960 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in May 1961. It took 25 years from joining to reach the board, and his entire career was built inside the company.

Education: Tokyo Higher Technical School, Architecture (now Tokyo Institute of Technology)

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in May 1963, succeeding Tokuji Mizushima. In the same month, Taira Kimura, Koji Minami and Hiroshi Takeuchi became Senior Managing Directors, and that November all three became Representative Directors and Senior Managing Directors. Homma had served alone as Representative Director and Executive Vice President for two years from May 1961. Net sales in the fiscal year ended March 1963, before he took office, were ¥94.2 billion, up 60% in two years from ¥58.6 billion in FY ended March 1961.

Initiatives

In 1964 the company designed and built the Hotel New Otani at Akasaka-mitsuke. It was Japan's first high-rise building after the January revision of the Building Standards Act lifted the 31-meter height limit, and its structural calculations used electronic computers. In January 1965 he introduced a divisional system of sales, administration, building and civil engineering headquarters, and set up a checking system in which management policy was put to the managing directors' meeting, with the President serving only as chair. In 1968 corporate planning and technology development headquarters were added, making six divisions. Net sales grew from ¥107.4 billion in FY ended March 1964 to ¥160.9 billion in FY ended March 1968.
