Background

He joined J.P. Morgan Securities in November 1992, then moved to Prudential Life Insurance in June 1995, Deloitte Tohmatsu FAS in October 2001 and GCA in January 2007. He joined Mitsui Matsushima in July 2013 as general manager of overseas operations and corporate planning. He became Executive Officer and general manager of corporate planning in April 2017 and Managing Executive Officer in April 2018. His career ran through securities, life insurance and financial advisory, without time in coal or on operating-company front lines.

Selection

In June 2020 he succeeded Tsuneo Amano as President, seven years after joining. In the fiscal year ended March 2020, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥66.5 billion and operating profit ¥2.7 billion, down from ¥75.7 billion and ¥5.2 billion the previous year. In his first year, FY ended March 2021, the company posted a net loss of ¥3.0 billion. The appointment appears to have placed a mid-career hire specializing in M&A advisory at the top as the founding coal business dwindled.

Initiatives

During his tenure he built up non-coal businesses through a series of acquisitions and exited the founding coal business. In FY ended March 2023, when coal prices soared, the company posted net sales of ¥80.0 billion, operating profit of ¥35.7 billion and net income of ¥22.9 billion. After the exit, operating profit was ¥7.6 billion in FY ended March 2025 and ¥9.5 billion in FY ended March 2026, above the ¥2.7 billion of the year before he took office. Net sales of ¥65.4 billion in FY ended March 2026 remained on the same scale as the ¥66.5 billion of that year.
