He became Executive Officer and General Manager of Human Resources at Mizuho Corporate Bank in April 2002, Managing Director in March 2006 and Director and Deputy President in April 2007. At the holding company he was responsible for risk management and human resources as Managing Executive Officer from March 2003, became Deputy President and Executive Officer heading the Financial Control and Accounting Group in April 2008, and Director and Deputy President in June that year. His was a career on the administrative side, through HR, risk and finance.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Law (1974)

Selection

In April 2009 he succeeded Terunobu Maeda as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2009, the year before he took office, the group posted a consolidated net loss of ¥588.8 billion owing to credit costs and losses on shareholdings after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. Its thin capital stood out among the three domestic megabank groups, and it needed to build up capital through repeated public offerings and preferred share issues. Promoting the head of the Financial Control and Accounting Group appears to have made rebuilding capital his first task.

Initiatives

The core banking systems of the three former banks still had not been unified nine years after the integration. Earlier, in May 2009, the affiliate Shinko Securities had absorbed the subsidiary Mizuho Securities and changed its name to Mizuho Securities. In March 2011 a large-scale system failure occurred at Mizuho Bank, and on May 31 the Financial Services Agency issued a business improvement order under the Banking Act. Before that, on May 18, Mizuho had announced a plan to merge Mizuho Corporate Bank and Mizuho Bank and replaced its management, and in June Yasuhiro Sato became Group CEO.
