Background

He joined the bank in April 1976, became an Executive Officer of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation in June 2003 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2009. In April 2011 he became President and Chief Executive Officer of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, leading the bank itself for six years. At the holding company he was Managing Executive Officer from April 2007 and a Director from June that year. By moving to the holding company presidency after six years as bank President, he followed a different route from his two predecessors.

Selection

In June 2017 he succeeded Koichi Miyata as President, and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group simultaneously moved to a company-with-nominating-committee structure. Outside directors make up a majority of each of the three committees for nomination, compensation and audit. In the fiscal year ended March 2017, the year before he took office, ordinary income was ¥5,133.2 billion, ordinary profit ¥1,005.9 billion and net income ¥706.5 billion. The appointment appears to have entrusted a former bank President with reshaping the board, 16 years after the merger, into one that separates oversight from execution.

Initiatives

In January 2018 the group merged SMBC Nikko Securities and SMBC Friend Securities, with SMBC Nikko as the surviving company, reducing its two securities companies to one. In April 2019 it made Sumitomo Mitsui Card a wholly owned subsidiary and merged Sumitomo Mitsui Asset Management with Daiwa SB Investments to form Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management. His two-year tenure was spent on reorganizing the group's lineup of companies into one per line of business.
