Background

He joined the bank in April 1982, became an Executive Officer of Resona Bank in October 2003 and Managing Executive Officer in June 2007. He also became Director and Executive Vice President of Resona Holdings in June 2009, and Representative Director and Executive Vice President of Resona Bank in April 2012. A career employee who spent 30 years at the bank itself, he rose to President after four years as an officer of the holding company.

Selection

In April 2013 he succeeded Seiji Higaki as Director, Representative Executive Officer and President of Resona Holdings, also serving as Representative Director and President of Resona Bank. In the fiscal year ended March 2013, the year before he took office, consolidated ordinary income was ¥832.1 billion, ordinary profit ¥285.1 billion and net income ¥275.1 billion. In the FY ended March 2010, three years before he took office, the Deposit Insurance Corporation of Japan was the largest shareholder with 64.3%. The change entrusted the job of finishing repayment of public funds to a career employee from the bank itself.

Initiatives

In April 2018 the group integrated Kinki Osaka Bank, Kansai Urban Banking and Minato Bank, launching Kansai Mirai Financial Group. The shareholder base also turned over during his tenure: the Deposit Insurance Corporation of Japan, which held 64.3% in the FY ended March 2010, had dropped out of the top ten by the FY ended March 2015, when Dai-ichi Life Insurance was the largest shareholder with 5.49%. At Resona Bank he also served as Chairman from April 2017.
