Background
He joined ITOCHU Corporation in April 1990 and in its Synthetic Resins Department became manager of the synthetic resins trade section in April 2011 and General Manager of the department in April 2018. From April 2013 he was posted to New York, serving as head of the energy and chemicals division and President of ITOCHU Chemicals America. He became Executive Officer and head of the Chemicals Division in April 2022, and Senior Executive Corporate Officer and head of the Chemicals Division in April 2024. His first position at ITOCHU ENEX was as an adviser in April 2025.
Selection
In June 2025 he succeeded Tomofumi Yoshida as Representative Director and President. He had been brought in as an adviser two months earlier, in April 2025, and became President without serving as Executive Vice President. His predecessor Yoshida had likewise gone from adviser in May 2022 to Executive Vice President in June that year and President in April 2023, continuing a path by which parent-company staff became President via an adviser post. As of the end of March 2026 ITOCHU held 55.71% of issued shares as the largest shareholder. He appears to have been chosen within the parent's personnel decisions.
Initiatives
Just before he took office, on April 30, 2025, the mid-term management plan "ENEX2030 '25-'26" was announced, so Nobuyuki Tabata's appointment came after the plan's release. In the fiscal year ended March 2026, his first results, consolidated net sales were ¥851.2 billion (prior year ¥924.5 billion), operating profit ¥24.1 billion (¥26.9 billion) and net income ¥16.1 billion (¥17.1 billion), lower on both sales and profit. The April 30, 2026 results briefing was held as a progress report on that plan. As of October 2026, no initiative attributable by name to Tabata as his decision can be confirmed in the materials at hand.
