Background

He joined Koito Manufacturing in April 1962, became General Manager of Administration and Overseas in April 1976 and a Director in June 1979. He rose to Managing Director in June 1983 and Senior Managing Director in June 1985, and became Representative Director and Executive Vice President in July 1992. It took him 17 years from joining to reach the board, and he became Executive Vice President in his 30th year. As of the end of March 2006 he held 103,000 shares, fewer than the 199,000 of Akira Koito, Representative Director and Executive Vice President at the same time, and the 274,000 of Representative Director and Chairman Junsuke Kato.

Selection

His predecessor Junsuke Kato had joined in April 1960, become a Director in May 1968, Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 1985 and Representative Director and President in June 1997. Otake became Representative Director and President in June 2003, 11 years after becoming Executive Vice President in July 1992 and after Kato's six years as President, with Kato moving to Representative Director and Chairman the same month. In the officer list at the end of March 2006, Akira Koito, who joined in 1970, and Masahiro Otake, who joined in 1977, sat alongside as Representative Directors and Executive Vice Presidents, from June 1999 and June 2005 respectively.

Initiatives

In November 2004 the company established Koito Europe NV in Belgium, and in September 2005 made China's Fuzhou Dayi Lamp a subsidiary. In November 2005 it set up Koito Kyushu in Saga Prefecture and Guangzhou Koito Automotive Lamp in China in the same month. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥311.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2003, just before he took office, to ¥397.5 billion in the FY ended March 2006, consolidated ordinary income from ¥12.9 billion to ¥25.6 billion and net income from ¥5.8 billion to ¥12.7 billion, while the equity ratio went from 35.29% to 38.18%.
