Background

Born in 1947, he joined Koito Manufacturing in April 1977 and became a Director ten years later, in June 1987. After serving as Managing Director from 1993, Senior Managing Director from 1999 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President from June 2005, he became Representative Director and President in June 2007. As of June 2015 he held 87 thousand shares, and his predecessor Takashi Otake held 109 thousand, standing out from the 8 to 17 thousand held by the other Executive Vice Presidents and Senior Managing Directors in the same table.

Selection

In June 2007 he succeeded Takashi Otake as President. Whereas he took ten years from joining to reach the board, Kenji Arima, who joined in the same April 1977, became a Director only in June 2005, 28 years later. The Executive Vice Presidents and Senior Managing Directors in the same officer list had also taken 25 to 29 years from joining to the board. Toyota Motor was Koito's largest shareholder with 20.0% in the fiscal year ended March 2006, a ratio that continued in the FY ended March 2010. The change appears not to have been a crisis-driven one but a succession following two years as Executive Vice President.

Initiatives

In May 2007, just before he took office, Koito began producing and selling the world's first LED headlamps. During his tenure he expanded overseas production, establishing PT. Indonesia Koito in June 2010, North American Lighting Mexico in December 2012 and Hubei Koito Automotive Lamp in September 2014. In August 2011, through a company split, subsidiary Koito Industries transferred everything except its aircraft seat business to Koito Electric Industries. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥429.0 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2011 to ¥706.5 billion in the FY ended March 2015, the year he stepped down, and operating income from ¥37.4 billion to ¥64.2 billion.
