Background

A career employee, he joined Yamaha Motor in April 1987. He became an Executive Officer in March 2014 and Director and Senior Executive Officer in March 2017. It took him 27 years from joining to become an executive officer, and only ten months from joining the board to become President. When he became President his title was Director and Senior Executive Officer, and he had not passed through the ranks of Senior Managing Director or Executive Vice President.

Education: Nagoya University, Faculty of Law, Law (1987)

Selection

In January 2018 he succeeded Hiroyuki Yanagi as Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer. In the fiscal year ended December 2017, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,670.0 billion, operating income ¥149.8 billion and net income ¥101.6 billion, up from operating income of ¥108.6 billion the year before. The appointment appears to have handed the company, in a year when results were improving, to an executive with ten months on the board.

Initiatives

In 2021 he closed the Hamakita plant at the company's birthplace, consolidating domestic motorcycle production into the head office plant. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,673.1 billion in the fiscal year ended December 2018, his first year, to ¥2,576.1 billion in the FY ended December 2024. Operating income over the same period went from ¥140.8 billion to ¥181.5 billion, with ¥243.9 billion posted in the FY ended December 2023. In the FY ended December 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, net sales fell to ¥1,471.2 billion and operating income to ¥81.7 billion, but they recovered to ¥1,812.4 billion and ¥182.3 billion in the following FY ended December 2021.
