Background

He joined Marubeni-Iida (now Marubeni) in April 1964 and in April 1986 headed the planning and coordination office of its Ship Department 2. He joined Namura Shipbuilding as a special advisor in January 1987 and became Executive Vice President that June. He was an outsider who had spent 23 years not on a shipyard floor but in a trading company's ship department, standing between shipowners and shipyards.

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in June 1988, a year and a half after joining in January 1987, having served one year as Executive Vice President. He became Representative Director, Chairman and President in April 2010, and served as President for about 23 years until stepping back to Chairman in April 2011. It was an appointment that placed him in the presidency with little time at the shipyard, apparently valuing his career in a trading company's ship department.

Initiatives

Consolidated net sales grew from ¥60.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2002 to ¥109.6 billion in FY ended March 2008, when operating income was ¥9.7 billion. In FY ended March 2011 net sales were ¥136.0 billion and operating income ¥6.6 billion. Before FY ended March 2001 the company disclosed only non-consolidated figures, so no consolidated numbers remain, and of his 23 years in office only the last ten can be traced in terms of results. In April 2011 he handed the presidency to Kensuke Namura.
