Background
He joined Kyocera in March 1982 and became an Executive Officer in April 2015, 33 years after joining. He became Managing Executive Officer in April 2016 and Director and Managing Executive Officer that June, and ten months later, in April 2017, President. It took him 33 years from joining to become an executive officer, but only two from executive officer to President.
Selection
In April 2017 he succeeded Goro Yamaguchi as President. Whereas his predecessor took about ten years to go from executive officer to President, Tanimoto took two, and was promoted ten months after joining the board. In the fiscal year ended March 2017, the year before, consolidated net sales were ¥1,422.8 billion, a second straight year of decline, and income before taxes was ¥137.8 billion.
Initiatives
In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2018, consolidated net sales returned to growth at ¥1,577.0 billion, and in FY ended March 2023 they topped ¥2 trillion for the first time at ¥2,025.3 billion. Employees also increased from 70,153 to 81,209. Operating income, however, declined after ¥148.9 billion in FY ended March 2022, shrinking to ¥27.2 billion in FY ended March 2025 with net income of ¥24.0 billion.
