Background
Born in Tokyo in 1909, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1933 and joined Sumitomo Goshi Kaisha that April. He moved to Sumitomo Machinery in December 1948, became a Director in the May 1955 reconstruction appointments and advanced to Managing Director in November 1959. As of 1962 he also headed the Tokyo branch, becoming Senior Managing Director in May 1964 and Director and Executive Vice President in June 1969.
Selection
In May 1970 Tsuneo Ichikawa stepped back to Chairman, and Executive Vice President Nobuhiko Iwasaki became president. In the same month Shinbu Otsuka, who had joined as Executive Vice President through the merger after serving as president of Uraga Heavy Industries, became a corporate auditor, removing the merger partner's representative from frontline management. Sales in the fiscal year ended March 1970 had doubled to ¥90.4 billion through the merger, and the work of unifying the two companies remained.
Initiatives
The company established the Ship Division in April 1971 and the Heavy Industries Division that October, adding the Machinery, Standard Machinery and International Divisions in February 1973, reorganizing its collection of business units into a division system. He appointed Shozo Doi of the former Uraga Heavy Industries to head the Ship Division and Motohiko Toyoshima, from Sumitomo Machinery, to head the Heavy Industries Division, drawing division heads from both sides. Sales grew from ¥90.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1970 to ¥174.0 billion in FY ended March 1974.
