Background

He joined ITOCHU Corporation in April 1985 and, after eight years there, moved to Mori Seiki in April 1993. He became a Director in June 1994, the year after joining, Managing Director in June 1996, and Senior Managing Director in June 1997. As of the fiscal year ended December 2025, two trust banks were the largest shareholders with 12.06% and 10.87%, shares in his own name accounted for 2.78%, and a trust account of the Mori Manufacturing Research and Technology Foundation held 2.51%.

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in June 1999, six years and two months after moving to Mori Seiki and five years after becoming a Director. He had been made a Director the year after leaving ITOCHU, so his was not a path of climbing the internal ranks. Counting from his April 1985 entry into ITOCHU, he became president 14 years into his working life. As of 2026, 27 years after taking office, he has not left the post.

Initiatives

In November 2009 he joined the supervisory board of Germany's DMG MORI AG (then GILDEMEISTER AG), and since May 2018 he has also chaired it. In 2015 the company moved its fiscal year-end from March to December, with the fiscal year ended December 2015 as the first December period. Consolidated net sales grew, on a March basis, from ¥69.7 billion in 2002 to ¥174.7 billion in 2015, and on a December basis from ¥318.8 billion in 2015 to ¥540.9 billion in 2024. In the fiscal year ended March 2010, the company posted an operating loss of ¥26.9 billion and a net loss of ¥34.7 billion.
