Background
He joined Sumitomo Electric Industries in April 1975, became an Executive Officer in June 2004 and a Managing Director in June 2008. After running overseas subsidiaries in the United States, Indonesia and Germany, he spent five years from June 2012 as president of Sumitomo Wiring Systems, the subsidiary making automotive wiring harnesses, and became President of the parent in June 2017. An automotive man, he moved between overseas subsidiaries and an auto parts operating company.
Selection
In June 2017 he succeeded Masayoshi Matsumoto as President; after 13 years, Matsumoto moved to Chairman that same month. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 2017, consolidated net sales were ¥2,814.4 billion and operating profit ¥150.5 billion. The handover appears to have been about making the businesses his predecessor had expanded through acquisitions and subsidiaries profitable, and unwinding parent-subsidiary listings.
Initiatives
In 2019 the company opened the Ibaraki Works in Hitachi, and in 2022 moved to the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. In 2023 it made Nissin Electric and Techno Associe wholly owned subsidiaries, partly unwinding long-standing parent-subsidiary listings. In 2024 it acquired the German power cable maker Südkabel as a subsidiary. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥2,814.4 billion in FY ended March 2017 to ¥4,679.7 billion in FY ended March 2025, and operating profit from ¥150.5 billion to ¥320.7 billion.
