Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tokyo Imperial University in March 1934 and joined The Japan Steel Works (the former company) in April 1941. He became a Director in November 1961, a Managing Director in November 1965, a Senior Managing Director in November 1967 and Executive Vice President in November 1969. He also sat on the boards of Arm Kosan from May 1967 and Mitsui Knowledge Industry from November 1970. Among a line of presidents from engineering faculties and technical schools, he was a career administrator with a law degree.

Selection

In November 1973 he succeeded Sasaburo Kobayashi as President. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 1973, net sales were ¥79.6 billion and ordinary profit ¥3.17 billion, three times the sales and 13 times the ordinary profit of ¥26.2 billion and ¥0.23 billion in FY ended March 1966, Kobayashi's first year. In 1970 there were two Executive Vice Presidents, Katsutoshi Isaji and Ono, but by 1972 only Ono remained. With results at their peak, the field of successors had narrowed to one.

Initiatives

Over his five and a half years, net sales grew from ¥80.9 billion in FY ended March 1974 to ¥141.5 billion in FY ended March 1979. Meanwhile the company posted net losses of ¥0.2 billion in FY ended March 1978 and ¥1.2 billion in FY ended March 1979, two straight years in the red. In January 1975 it opened a machinery research laboratory within the Hiroshima plant, and in August 1978 established Japan Steel Works America, Inc. in the United States. From 1978 to 1979 it set up a series of subsidiaries, including Nikko Koei, Nikko Unyu and Nikko Sekkei.
