Background
At Mitsui & Co., he was in charge of steel products for the Americas headquarters from April 2008 and general manager of the overseas steel business division from October 2009. He joined Yamato Kogyo in April 2012 as general manager of business development and became a Managing Director that June. He became Representative Director and President in June 2017, five years after joining. An outsider, he had handled overseas steel trading at a trading house.
Selection
In June 2017 he succeeded Hiroyuki Inoue as Representative Director and President. Among the major shareholders as of FY ended March 2016, just before he took over, Hiroyuki Inoue personally held 11.17% and Inoue Fudosan 8.26%, together 19.4%. Mitsui & Co. was the third-largest shareholder at 6.76% at the same point, and Kobayashi came from Mitsui & Co. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 2017, consolidated net sales were ¥142.1 billion and ordinary profit ¥21.5 billion.
Initiatives
During his tenure ordinary profit grew to ¥90.5 billion in FY ended March 2023 and ¥99.2 billion in FY ended March 2024, and net income reached ¥70.0 billion. Operating profit in those two years was only ¥16.8 billion and ¥17.3 billion, so most of the profit arose below the operating line. In FY ended March 2026, too, ordinary profit was ¥65.2 billion and net income ¥62.4 billion against net sales of ¥160.4 billion and operating profit of ¥4.5 billion; the gap between operating and ordinary profit stayed wide throughout his tenure.
