Background
He joined the company in April 1982 and worked his way through planning roles, serving as head of the Business Development Office in the Business Development Division, head of the Planning Office in the R&D Strategy Department, and general manager of the R&D Management Department in the R&D Division. He became head of the Surgical Division in April 2007, Executive Officer and general manager of pharmaceutical sales in the Pharmaceuticals Division in April 2012, and Managing Executive Officer and head of the Pharmaceuticals Division in April 2014. From April 2016 he oversaw the Japan business, and in April 2019 he became head of Japan Business and of the Ophthalmology Division. He was a career employee whose path ran from R&D planning to domestic sales.
Selection
He was promoted to Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2022, and five months later, in September 2022, became Representative Director, President and CEO, succeeding Tatsuo Taniuchi. The change came mid-year rather than at the June general shareholders' meeting, and his time as Executive Vice President lasted only five months. The appointment appears to have rewarded his record in running the Japan business.
Initiatives
In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2023, the company posted a consolidated operating loss of ¥3.1 billion and a net loss of ¥14.9 billion, swinging into the red from operating income of ¥35.9 billion and net income of ¥27.2 billion the year before. In FY ended March 2024 it recovered to revenue of ¥302.0 billion and operating income of ¥38.5 billion, and in FY ended March 2025 operating income reached ¥46.9 billion, above the level before he took office. Revenue was nearly flat at ¥302.0 billion in FY ended March 2024 and ¥300.0 billion in FY ended March 2025; only profits came back.
