Background
He joined Fujisawa Pharmaceutical in April 1980 and became General Manager of Corporate Planning in April 2003. When Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical and Fujisawa Pharmaceutical merged to form Astellas Pharma in April 2005, he became an Executive Officer in June of that year and Senior Executive Officer in June 2008, and just before becoming President he was in charge of corporate strategy and finance. A career employee, he rose through corporate planning rather than research or sales.
Selection
In June 2011 he became President, succeeding Masafumi Nogimori. In the fiscal year ended March 2011, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥953.9 billion, operating income ¥119.2 billion and net income ¥67.6 billion, with operating income down for two straight years from ¥250.4 billion in FY ended March 2009. Over the same two years consolidated employees grew from 14,261 to 16,279, so profits were falling even as the company grew in scale.
Initiatives
Looking at the period from the fiscal year ended March 2013, when the company moved from Japanese GAAP to IFRS, consolidated revenue grew from ¥1,005.6 billion to ¥1,300.3 billion in FY ended March 2018, and net income from ¥82.8 billion to ¥164.6 billion. Net income reached ¥193.6 billion in FY ended March 2016 and ¥218.7 billion in FY ended March 2017. Consolidated employees peaked at 17,649 in FY ended March 2014 and then declined, to 16,617 in FY ended March 2018.
