Background

He joined Tsuruha in June 1976 and became a Director two years later, in July 1978. After serving as Senior Managing Director from August 1994 and Representative Director and Senior Managing Director from August 1996, he became Representative Director and President of Tsuruha in August 1997. He also had capital behind him: among major shareholders in the FY ended May 2006, he himself held 5.46%, alongside other Tsuruha family members Hiroko Tsuruha at 4.85%, Hajime Tsuruha at 4.4% and Akiko Tsuruha at 3.33%. The largest shareholder, however, was Aeon with 13.35%.

Selection

In August 2005 he became Representative Director and President of the holding company Tsuruha Holdings. He was its first president with no predecessor, and had been President of the operating company Tsuruha since August 1997. He became a Director of Tsuruha in August 2003 and also its President and Executive Officer in August 2008, directing both the holding company and the operating company. In the FY ended May 2006, the period after he took office, consolidated sales were ¥157.5 billion, operating income ¥7.4 billion and net income ¥4.8 billion.

Initiatives

Over his nine years, consolidated sales grew 2.5 times from ¥157.5 billion in the FY ended May 2006 to ¥388.5 billion in the FY ended May 2014. Operating income rose from ¥7.4 billion to ¥24.1 billion and net income from ¥4.8 billion to ¥14.6 billion. Sales grew every period without a break, building up to ¥299.6 billion in the FY ended May 2011, ¥321.0 billion in the FY ended May 2012 and ¥343.0 billion in the FY ended May 2013. In August 2014 he handed the presidency to Masashi Horikawa and moved to Representative Director and Chairman of Tsuruha.
