Background

He joined in April 1985, became a director of Takara Bio in April 2002 and its Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2009. After 12 years on the bio side, in June 2014 he became a director of the holding company and Senior Managing Director of Takara Shuzo, moving to the alcoholic beverages operating company. He advanced to Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2016 and Representative Director and President in June 2018.

Selection

In June 2018 he succeeded Toshio Kakimoto as president. He had joined the holding company's management as Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2016 and reached the presidency two years later. Among major shareholders in the FY ended March 2016, trust banks and financial institutions dominated, led by The Master Trust Bank of Japan at 9.28%, while among operating companies Kokubu Group held only 1.6% and the Takara Group employee stock ownership association 1.47%. The appointment appears to have promoted, in sequence, an internal candidate who had overseen both alcoholic beverages and bio, rather than someone from a founding family or a particular business partner.

Initiatives

During his tenure he made overseas Japanese food wholesale the axis of growth, expanding the overseas business under Takara Shuzo International. Consolidated net sales grew 31% from ¥300.9 billion in the FY ended March 2022 to ¥394.3 billion in the FY ended March 2026. Operating income rose to ¥43.4 billion in the FY ended March 2022 and fell back to ¥17.1 billion in the FY ended March 2026. In 2026 the company decided to make Takara Bio a wholly owned subsidiary, moving to end the parent-subsidiary dual listing.
