Background
He joined Sekisui House in April 1965. He became a Director in April 1990, in his 25th year with the company, then Managing Director in April 1994 and Senior Managing Director in April 1996. In April 1998, in his 33rd year, he became Representative Director and President. He is a career employee who rose to the board at Sekisui House alone without working elsewhere, and after stepping down as President he remained in management as Representative Director, Chairman and CEO.
Selection
In April 1998 he succeeded Isao Okui as Representative Director and President, two years after becoming Senior Managing Director, and served as President for ten years until April 2008. As of the fiscal year ended January 2006, during his presidency, the largest shareholder was Sekisui Chemical with a 14.4% stake. The appointment appears to have followed the internal order of officers while preserving the capital affiliation.
Initiatives
Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,305.4 billion in the fiscal year ended January 2002 to ¥1,597.8 billion in his final year, FY ended January 2008. Operating profit, disclosed from FY ended January 2005 at ¥76.6 billion, rose to ¥109.7 billion in FY ended January 2008. In April 2008 he stepped down as President to become Representative Director, Chairman and CEO, appointing his successor Toshinori Abe as Representative Director, President and COO and separating the CEO and President roles at that point.
