Background
Born in 1914, he was from Aichi Prefecture. He graduated from the architecture department of Osaka Institute of Technology in March 1936 and in February 1937, at age 23, founded Hasegawa Komuten as a sole proprietorship. When it was reorganized as a corporation in August 1946 he became President, serving until he stepped back to Chairman in July 1969. He was a trained architect who went straight into management, and the company began with the founder alone handling both construction and management.
Selection
He was the founding President, with no predecessor. The August 1946 reorganization was the procedure of moving a business run for nine and a half years as a sole proprietorship into a stock company, and the founder himself kept the presidency. In the 1964 officer listing he appears first as President, supported by three Senior Managing Directors. The presidency changed hands in July 1969, so the top post did not move for 23 years after incorporation.
Initiatives
During his tenure the company expanded from building contracting into real estate. It opened an Osaka office in September 1946 and a Tokyo office in February 1951, entered building leasing in August 1957 and real estate sales in July 1959. It also went to the capital markets early, offering its shares over the counter in March 1961 and listing on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in March 1962. In April 1965 it was moved to the First Sections of the Tokyo and Nagoya stock exchanges, becoming a First Section company 28 years after its founding.
