Background

He joined the former Hazama (now Aoyama Kanzai) in April 1976 and became general manager of the planning department in the corporate planning division in November 1995. After a series of field-side posts, as Director, Executive Officer and Hokuriku branch manager in June 2000 and Director, Managing Executive Officer and deputy head of the civil engineering division in June 2001, he moved to head the corporate planning office in March 2002. That June he became Representative Director and Executive Vice President while continuing to head corporate planning, and in June 2003 he became Representative Director and President of the former Hazama. After overseeing a branch and civil engineering operations, his last post was corporate planning, which handled the design of the company split.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1976)

Selection

On October 1, 2003, Hazama Corporation was established through an incorporation-type split of the former Hazama as the successor to its construction business, and was listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange the same day. Niina, who had become President of the former Hazama in June 2003 before the split, continued as the new company's first President. Listed on the same roster as Representative Directors and Executive Vice Presidents were Michio Shishido, who joined in May 2003 from Mizuho Corporate Bank, where he had been Senior Managing Director, and Shigefumi Yoshino, who joined the same May from Ando Corporation, where he had been an Executive Officer. At the end of March 2006, major shareholders included Aoyama Kanzai with 32.55% and Ando Corporation with 10.00%.

Initiatives

In April 2005 the subsidiary Aoyama Kiko absorbed Nihon Ikosu, and in May the head office moved from Kita-Aoyama in Minato Ward to Toranomon. That same May the branch organization was reshuffled, abolishing the Tokyo and Kanto branches and opening a Kanto civil engineering branch and two Tokyo building branches. In the fourth year after the split, the fiscal year ended March 2007, consolidated net sales were ¥237.2 billion, ordinary profit ¥3.4 billion, net income ¥0.9 billion and employees 2,411. The next year, FY ended March 2008, net sales were ¥221.0 billion and net income ¥0.8 billion, as thin profits relative to sales persisted.
