Japan's business services industry encompasses companies providing intangible services across staffing, advertising, consulting, and BPO. Recruit Holdings was founded in 1960 as a university job advertising business and built matching platforms across life domains—Rikunabi, SUUMO, and Hot Pepper. Its 2012 acquisition of Indeed for roughly $1 billion transformed it into a leading tech company exceeding $70 billion in market capitalization by 2021. Dentsu Group long dominated the domestic advertising market and joined the world's top five ad groups by acquiring Aegis Group for approximately $4 billion in 2013. Japan's aging population and labor shortage present both headwinds and tailwinds—difficulty in securing talent coexists with expanding demand for staffing services.
