Background

He joined Mitsui Bank in April 1981 and became a Managing Executive Officer in April 2013. After 33 years in banking he joined Mitsui-Soko Holdings in May 2014, becoming a Director and assistant to the head of the finance and accounting division the following month, Director and Senior Executive Officer in October that year, and Managing Director in June 2016. He was an outsider who reached the board from finance, without holding operational posts in warehousing or logistics.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Commerce (B.Com. 1981)

Selection

In June 2017 he succeeded Kei Fujioka as Representative Director, President and Group CEO, three years and one month after joining in May 2014. In the year before his appointment, the fiscal year ended March 2017, the company posted a net loss of ¥23.4 billion on operating revenue of ¥225.5 billion and operating profit of ¥5.8 billion. The change came right after a large net loss, and the appointment appears to have entrusted him with restoring the company's finances.

Initiatives

Consolidated results, which had shown a net loss of ¥23.4 billion in the year before his appointment, returned to net income of ¥4.4 billion in the following fiscal year ended March 2018. The company recorded operating revenue of ¥301.0 billion and operating profit of ¥25.9 billion in the FY ended March 2022, and net income of ¥15.6 billion in the FY ended March 2023. Operating revenue rose by ¥74.0 billion over nine years, from ¥225.5 billion before his appointment to ¥299.5 billion in the FY ended March 2026. In June 2022 he also became chairman of the board while remaining President and Group CEO.
