Background
He graduated from the law faculty of Kyoto Imperial University in March 1939 and joined Kawasaki Dockyard that April. He was from Iwade Town, Naga District, Wakayama Prefecture. He became a Director in December 1964, Managing Director in November 1969, Senior Managing Director in May 1975 and Executive Vice President in November 1976, and President in June 1977—38 years after joining and twelve and a half years after joining the board.
Selection
In June 1977 Kiyoshi Yotsumoto stepped back to Chairman, and Umeda, then Executive Vice President, became the eighth president. That same month Hikoo Ando and Toraichi Imai rose to Executive Vice President. Umeda had only just become Senior Managing Director in May 1975 and Executive Vice President in November 1976, taking the presidency two years after his promotion to Senior Managing Director. In the fiscal year ended March 1977, the year before, non-consolidated net sales were ¥539.9 billion and ordinary income ¥29.3 billion, both above the previous year's ¥490.1 billion and ¥20.0 billion.
Initiatives
In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 1978, non-consolidated net sales grew to ¥566.0 billion, but ordinary income fell from ¥29.3 billion to ¥16.1 billion. In FY ended March 1979 net sales sank to ¥501.4 billion and ordinary income to ¥0.5 billion, with a net loss of ¥5.8 billion. The Tobishima branch works opened in December 1979, and in FY ended March 1980 ordinary income recovered to ¥8.3 billion and net income to ¥2.7 billion. In the 1981 directory, Umeda is listed as Chairman.
