Background

He opened his own practice as a certified public accountant in April 1972 and joined Resorttrust as Managing Director the following April, in 1973. He was not a career employee who rose through the ranks but an accounting professional brought in as an officer. He became Senior Managing Director in September 1980 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in July 1993. His name is not among the top ten major shareholders in the fiscal year ended March 2006, where the only individual is Yoshiro Ito with 3.25%. Running the company and owning its capital were separate roles.

Education: Hitotsubashi University, Faculty of Commerce

Selection

He became COO in May 1996 and, three years later, Representative Director and President in April 1999. He was promoted after first carrying executive responsibility for six years as Representative Director and Executive Vice President and three years as COO. His presidency lasted about 19 years, until he moved to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO in April 2018. The succession appears to have shifted responsibility in stages.

Initiatives

After he took office in April 1999, the company listed on the First Sections of both the Tokyo and Nagoya stock exchanges in November 2000. In September 2005 it set up Tokyo Midtown Medicine jointly with Mitsui Fudosan, launching its membership-based Medical business in earnest. In June 2010 it acquired Trust Garden to enter the senior living business, and in July 2014 it acquired The Kahala Hotel & Resort in Hawaii. Consolidated revenue grew from ¥99.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2012 to ¥165.4 billion in FY ended March 2018.
