Background

He joined Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical in April 1999, became General Manager of the Corporate Planning Headquarters in February 2007 and Director and Executive Officer in May of that year. After serving as Managing and Senior Managing Executive Officer, he became Director and Executive Vice President in May 2014, and became President 16 years after joining. In the fiscal year ended February 2025 the major shareholders were led by trust banks and life insurers, The Master Trust Bank of Japan at 9.25%, Custody Bank of Japan at 5.96% and Nippon Life Insurance at 5.33%, followed by local financial institutions Fukuoka Bank at 4.6% and Saga Bank at 3.21%.

Selection

In May 2015 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Hirotaka Nakatomi. In the fiscal year ended February 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥156.8 billion and operating income ¥20.5 billion, the second straight year of sales growth from ¥142.8 billion in FY ended February 2013. The change came eight years after he joined the board in May 2007 and one year after he became Executive Vice President. Rather than a takeover in a crisis, the appointment appears to have been an orderly promotion of someone who had come through corporate planning.

Initiatives

During his tenure consolidated net sales fell from ¥161.9 billion in the fiscal year ended February 2016 to ¥114.5 billion in FY ended February 2021, and operating income from ¥27.7 billion to ¥10.7 billion. Sales then grew for four straight years, recovering to ¥156.0 billion with operating income of ¥18.9 billion in FY ended February 2025. Since sales were ¥156.8 billion in FY ended February 2015, the year before he took office, it took ten years to return to the original level.
