Background

He joined Sumitomo Corporation in April 1962, becoming a Director in June 1992, Managing Director in June 1996 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2000. The career listed in the annual securities report consists only of his 38 years at Sumitomo Corporation, and he moved to the top of an operating company without hands-on experience in paper or corrugated board. At Rengo he became Representative Director, Chairman and President in April 2014 and Representative Director, Chairman and CEO in April 2020, keeping representative authority even after giving up the presidency.

Education: Kobe University, Faculty of Economics (1962)

Selection

In June 2000 he moved from Representative Director and Executive Vice President of Sumitomo Corporation to Representative Director and President of Rengo. He had gained representative authority at Sumitomo Corporation in April that year, and two months later moved to the presidency of his new company. Sumitomo Corporation was among the major shareholders in the FY ended March 2006, ranking eighth with 3.00%, so the appointment brought in someone from a trading company with a capital relationship. His tenure as President lasted 20 years, until April 2020.

Initiatives

Consolidated net sales were ¥381.2 billion in the FY ended March 2001, the period after he took office, and grew to ¥474.8 billion with operating income of ¥32.4 billion in the FY ended March 2011. In the FY ended March 2015, however, operating income was ¥5.6 billion on sales of ¥522.6 billion, and the margin fell to 1.1%. The lineup of major shareholders also changed: Nippon Paper, not in the top ten in the FY ended March 2006, was the second largest shareholder with 4.87% in the FY ended March 2015.
