Background
He founded Sanyo Agency Co., Ltd. (now Seria) in October 1987 and became its Representative Director and President. From July 1990 he also served as Representative Director of Nissho (now Hiro Corporation), becoming its Representative Director and President in November 1998. As founder he has strong backing from share ownership. Among major shareholders in the FY ended March 2006, Hiro Corporation was the largest with 30.06% and Hiromitsu Kawai personally second with 6.64%. In the FY ended March 2010, the company still held 30.06% and he held 6.65%.
Selection
He was the first president of the company he founded, with no predecessor. From taking office in October 1987 until June 2014, he held the presidency unchanged for about 27 years. His successor was Eiji Kawai, then Managing Director and head of corporate planning. In the FY ended March 2014, just before the change, non-consolidated net sales were ¥109.3 billion and ordinary income ¥10.2 billion, up ¥11.1 billion and ¥1.9 billion from the previous year.
Initiatives
Non-consolidated net sales grew about 3.4-fold from ¥32.5 billion in the FY ended March 2002 to ¥109.3 billion in the FY ended March 2014, just before he stepped down. Ordinary income rose from ¥0.7 billion to ¥10.2 billion over the same 12 years. After ordinary income fell to ¥1.6 billion in the FY ended March 2009, it increased for five straight years through the FY ended March 2014. An in-house ordering support system that underpinned store ordering appears to have been the foundation for this expansion.
