1915年に建築家の横河民輔氏が東京・渋谷で興した電気計器研究所が起源。
1917年に電流計・電圧計・電力計を国産化し、1975年発表の総合制御システムCENTUMでプラント制御の柱を築いた。
売上の大半を制御事業が占め、中東・アフリカなど海外の石油・ガス設備へ制御システムを納める。
前身は1920年設立の横河電機製作所。
1982年にElectrofactを買収し、1983年に北辰電機と合併した。
1986年に横河電機へ商号変更し、2016年にKBC Advancedを買収。
同業との水平統合とクロスボーダーM&Aで制御事業を広げた。
