"平民にも姓の使用が認められ、一族が公に十合を名のりはじめた年、初代伊兵衛は店を退いた。1870年4月15日、66歳で大和屋のいっさいを33歳の二代伊兵衛に渡したのである。維新で大坂の経済が根元から崩れていくなか、この急変には合わせきれないと見たのだろう。職業と平民の身なりをめぐる制限は翌1871年になくなり、1872年には政府が旧来の株仲間を廃止して、誰でも自由に商いができる原則が固まった。父のやり方を引き継ぐ考えはなく、同じ年に二代伊兵衛は呉服店への転業を決めた。庶民が力をつけ商業が近代化していく以上、古手屋に大きな将来は望めないと判断したのである。\n\n古着を商ってきた大和屋は、やがて新品も扱うようになった。転業の足がかりに選んだのは吊りぎれである。大坂でこの品が店先に出るのは誓文払いのような特別な売出しの日に限られ、いつでも手に入るものではなかった。もとは呉服の染め見本や仕立ての余りぎれのことで、裏地、襦袢の袖、前掛け、座ぶとんの側まで使い道が多く、安いので庶民に好まれた。四季を通じて店に吊るし、大和屋の看板となる品に仕立てる——二代伊兵衛の狙いはそこにあった。もっとも、本来は半端物を片づけるための品を切らさず並べるには、呉服店と同じ仕入れ先では量が足りないため、二代伊兵衛は蒸汽船で伏見まで行き、高瀬舟に乗り換えて四条室町の呉服問屋を訪ね歩き、蔵の奥で眠っている反物や使わなくなった染め見本を安値でまとめて買った。呉服商も古手商も、大坂では誰も思いつかない仕入れ方だった。\n\n坐摩の大火と呼ばれる火事は1875年2月7日の午前11時頃に近所から出て、西風に乗って東へ燃え広がり、午後10時頃まで続いて民家820戸、寺院5、土蔵16を焼いた。大和屋にとってはこれが三度目の焼失で、吊りぎれの売れ行きが年々伸びていたさなかのことだった。1860年に二度焼けたときと違い、蓄えは十分にあり信用も固まっていたため、店はすぐに建て直され、商いもほどなく持ち直した。一方で二代伊兵衛は、坐摩前の店をこの機会に広げることはせず、隣の土地を買おうとした跡も見当たらない。維新後の十合が時の流れを機敏にとらえて伸びたのだとすれば、焼け跡を元の広さのまま再建したこともその判断の一つだったのだろう。", "二代伊兵衛は、店を継ぐ人材を養子縁組で確保した。長女とくは使用人の十合庄吉を婿に迎え、1876年4月には次女はるも使用人の木水重助と縁組し、重助が十合姓を名のった。男子のない家で長女に婿を取るのは当然としても、次女まで他家に嫁がせなかったのは、大和屋を広げる計画に沿って志を同じくする一族を増やすためだった。重助夫婦は安堂寺橋通三丁目に小さな呉服店を開いた。扱いは木綿物と吊りぎれで、規模も小さく業績は上がらなかった。それでも店を構えたのは、手狭な坐摩前から重助を独立させ、呉服商いを習熟させるためだった。長堀川の南、島の内へ出るための布石である。\n\n1877年、西郷隆盛の挙兵で始まった西南戦争は、大阪に征討軍の基地を置かせ、軍隊とご用商人を集めて市中を軍需ブームに沸かせた。大阪の経済が維新の混乱と低迷から脱け出したのは、この戦争を契機としてだった。大和屋はその渦中で安堂寺橋通の店を閉じ、心斎橋筋一丁目の鰻谷通西南角に呉服店を開いた。地主の田中千治郎から土地建物を借りて改造した店で、面積は104坪、坐摩前の店のおよそ2倍あった。同時に古手業を完全に廃業し、江戸時代以来の屋号も捨てた。新しい看板には「現金正札呉服太物帯地十合呉服店」としるされた。改造の資金も、二店にわたる絹物の仕入れも巨額で、大和屋時代の蓄積はすべて投入された。\n\n心斎橋筋一丁目には大丸、二丁目には小大丸と丸亀屋という大呉服店が店を構えていた。屋号を捨てた新参が並び立つには、店の名そのものを売らなければならない。商標には生家きぬやから継いだ「まるにちきり」を用い、商号を改めてからこれを積極的に使うようになった。もっとも「十合」はすぐには読んでもらえず、1879年の浪華諸商独案内も1882年の浪華の魁も店を「曽合」と当て字で紹介しており、店自身も1880年代の初めまでこの表記を併用した。1885年7月、京都に支店を置いた。吊りぎれの仕入れで通った産地に、自前の拠点を構えたことになる。取扱いは高級品から実用品までのあらゆる呉服類におよび、心斎橋進出から短い年月で十合の名は広まった。",
