"戦時にいったん定着を阻まれたジャスト・イン・タイムの考え方は、戦後、豊田自動織機出身の大野耐一氏の手で\"かんばん\"として蘇った。後工程が前工程へ必要な数量を伝える仕組みは、標準化と現場改善を軸とするトヨタ生産方式へ発展した。1951年5月には一般従業員から改善提案を募る創意くふう提案制度が始まった。1951年度に789件・参加率8%だった提案は、1965年度には1万5968件・参加率30%まで拡大している。設備投資に回す資金の乏しさが、現場の工夫で生産性を上げる方法を選ばせた。\n\n1955年、トヨタは本格的な乗用車として初代クラウンとトヨペット・マスターを発売し、乗用車市場への参入を果たした。クラウンは前輪独立懸架を備え、国産技術だけで設計した乗用車であった。もっとも当時の需要はタクシー事業者と富裕層が中心で、月販は2000台程度にとどまっていた。1956年3月にはトヨタ自動車販売が産業車両を発売し、1957年10月には米国トヨタ自動車販売を設立し、対米輸出の窓口を米国内に置いた。同年に輸出した小型車クラウンは高速走行の性能が足らず、米国市場では受け入れられなかった。乗用車を量産する専用の工場は、まだどの国産メーカーも持っていなかった。\n\n英二専務は月産1万台の乗用車専門工場を提案したが、当時としては規模が大きすぎるとして、石田退三社長は月産5000台で建設を決断した。1958年7月に社内へ乗用車専門工場建設委員会が設けられ、委員長には豊田章一郎氏が就任した。設備は月産5000台に抑えながら、建屋だけは将来の月産1万台に対応する規模で設計するという判断が下された。元町工場は着工から11カ月の1959年8月に竣工し、同年9月18日から19日にかけて完成披露式が催された。創業以来の生産累計50万台目となるクラウン・デラックスのラインオフ式も併せて行われた。式辞に立った石田退三社長は元町工場を\"2割程度の完成\"と位置づけ、『生産台数の5倍にあらずして内容の5倍』への拡大を掲げた。同年12月、元町工場は目標としていた月産1万台を達成した。",
