"1961年前半、日本ミシン製造は欧文ポータブルタイプライターと学校教育用精密小型旋盤で、事務用機器と工作機械の2分野へ同時に進出した。事務機では高い精度を要する活字のプレス技術だけを持っておらず、ヨーロッパの活字専門メーカーから買えばただちに生産へ入れたが、その最短距離を取らずに活字の製造技術へ自ら取り組んだ。ミシン製造に要る工作機械を買う金がなく、製造した第一号がその工作機械だった。この出発点から、必要な技術は回り道をしてでも社内に取り込むという判断が、以後も繰り返されることになる。1958年に米国の雑誌に載った自動加工ラインの記事を頼りに、同じ設備を手探りで自前で組み上げたのも、その一例である。回り道を重ねた末、世界全体で作られる欧文タイプライターの10分の1が同社製となった。\n\n1961年7月、名古屋市瑞穂区堀田通に新しい本社ビルが竣工した。1959年9月の伊勢湾台風では山崎川の決壊で本社一階と各工場が浸水し、数日間の全工場操業停止と1億7,700万円の被害を出していたため、新ビルは一階の床を路面より80センチ高くした。多角化が進むと日本ミシン製造という商号が事業の範囲を映さなくなり、管理職全員へのアンケートを経て、1962年7月に商号をブラザー工業へ改めた。株式の公開は、ミシンを本業とするメーカーとしては3番目であった。正義氏本人は公開に乗り気でなかったが、副社長を務める弟の実一氏が、同族による経営はもはや限界だとして強く推した。その結果、1963年1月に東京・大阪・名古屋の三証券取引所で第二部に上場し、翌1964年4月には第一部へ移った。\n\n正義氏は1950年に訪米した際、家庭電化製品の伸びを確信したものの、販売網が弱いことを理由に生産には踏み出していない。販売面では1955年ごろから、特約店頼みの体制を直営店と資本提携店に切り替える方針が取られた。戦前から現金での取引と保証金の差し入れを条件に一流の特約店を確保してきたので、業績は順調だった。それでも正義氏は、今の特約店網のままではこの先の競争を勝ち抜けないと見た。特約店を刺激しないよう、直営店はまず成績の振るわない地域や販売の地盤が弱い地域から出した。関係を断ちにくい特約店には出資し、実質的に直営店として機能させた。切り替えを積み重ねた結果、1965年には売上の80%を直営店と資本提携店が稼ぐ形になった。流通が自前になって初めて、ミシン以外の品目を同じ経路へ流せるようになった。",
